Just who are 'they' anyway?

Just who are 'they' anyway?
An exclusive report by HalluSination Today Editor Hillary Scandell.
It was an ordinary day. I was sipping my foam latte at the Coffee Chop at the top of Starbright Towers watching the helicopters take off and land when I overheard what would make any good investigative reporter spill her milk.
Coffee Chop Manager Noah Tall was admonishing his Head Barista Vicki Pedia for bothering to research 'The They Commission' online.
Coffee Chop Manager Noah Tall was admonishing his Head Barista Vicki Pedia for bothering to research 'The They Commission' online.
Hovering over Vicki's laptop, her fingers slowing on the keys as he spoke, Noah told her that he knows someone who knows of someone, who said they know somebody on 'The They Commission', and you'll never find anything about them online.
They know how to stay incognito. They don't have a website and you won't find them on anyone else's site. Not even a link. They just don't have a face, and they never will. |
For generations, they have successfully managed to wield their power to kill enthusiam for any dreams you may have, and to do so faceless. "How many times have I told you", I overheard Noah blurt to a shrinking Vicki, "just forget about your dream and save yourself a boat load of BS!"
As soon as Noah made his way back to the kitchen, I grabbed my milky latte and muffin and sauntered over to Vicki's table. Out of the corner of my eye I could see a fascinating black and white photo on her laptop. It was a blurry picture someone had managed to sneak out of a meeting with 'The They Commission'.
"Impressive research." Vicki looked up at me and smiled. "Do you plan to blog about this?"
She shyly shook her head no. "Do you mind if I do, maybe even investigate this further with you?"
Vicki then looked around the room to see if anyone could hear, then nodded her head toward the chair next to her, and that was the beginning of our secret collaboration. Whatever we'd come up with, I knew people wouldn't take it seriously, but I had the story of a lifetime right in front of my eyes, and this had gone on for far too long. Someone had to finally put a face to the faceless They, and it may as well be us.
The early research was painstaking. It turns out Noah was right about one thing. We couldn't find anything online about The They. It turned out the one tattered picture that initially sparked our attention was one of a kind, with no author and no explanation, which only made us want to investigate even more. Knowing the risk of posting this online, after weeks of volleying emails, voicemails and texts, we present our findings in the picture below.
This picture says everything we cannot. Doing this research leaves us uncertain about our respective futures. It may cost both of us a couple rungs on the ladder, but Vicki and I are certain we are doing the right thing. If it helps stop just one person from losing their dream after a visit to the 'They Commission', it will all be worth it.
